Singapore Citizenship Ceremony

7 Nov 2016
Finally I received letter for Citizenship Ceremony. I'm so happy that after approx. 4 months, I will be receiving my pink IC and citizenship certificate. As you can read from the letter below, gentlemen's attire is long sleeve shirt and tie, while ladies' attire is only smart casual wear. The attendance to the ceremony is compulsory.

19 Nov 2016
It's the ceremony day! Registration starts at 1.30pm and Guest-of-Honor arrived around 2.15pm. Grassroots volunteers were around to usher the new citizens to their seats. Each new citizens are allowed to bring one guest to the ceremony, and they are seated at the back of the halls where rows of seats are provided for them.

There were 180 new citizens today. The new citizens were mainly from Malaysia (majority), China and India.

The whole atmosphere before the ceremony was relaxed, there was no music being played in the hall as it was supposed to be a solemn event. The new citizens speak softly among themselves, and there was a grassroots volunteer as the emcee of ceremony. He spoke in a formal tone welcoming the new citizens, introducing the events and also sharing some his volunteering and life experience. He also briefed about the procedure of the presentation of certificates. A photo of receiving the cert will be given complimentary at the end of the ceremony, collected from reception counter.

We are given a goodie bag. There are mineral water, pen, survey form, volunteer form and a book 'HOME' (as photo below).

Two videos were presented. The first video highlighted the multi-racial society of Singapore and how we revolve around these different cultures in harmonious way. Second video is about Sembawang and it promotes "kampung" spirit where neighbors should care and look out for one another.

The Guest-of-Honor was invited to stage to give a speech.

Following the end of the speech was the presentation of certificates and IC. Then all were asked to stand, followed by the recitation of the Singapore National Pledge and the singing of National Anthem.

The ceremony ended when all were invited to enjoy the buffet meal provided and mingle. Singapore local food like spring roll, laksa, carrot cake, fried beehoon were served.

After the meal, new citizens left Woodlands Community Club.
