Singapore Citizenship Approved / Renounce Malaysia Citizenship

So here I would like to share the process after my application of Singapore Citizenship approved and renouncing of Malaysia Citizenship.

6 Jan 2016
I got AIP approved on 6 Jan 2016. So I started doing the 3 steps in Singapore Citizenship Journey (SCJ) at https://www.sgjourney.gov.sg/login
- Quiz (about Singapore history and culture) which I did on 7 Jan 2016.
- Singapore Experiential Tour: Fort Canning which I did on 31 Jan 2016. (Be prepared for mosquitos bites)
- Community Sharing Session on 23 Feb 2016. (This is to share your thoughts about Singapore and being Singaporean)

After completing all these steps, you will need to login to SCJ to do survey. When it is 100% completed, wait for your Letter of Approval for Singapore Citizenship before you head down to High Commission of Malaysia.

9 Mar 2016
I received my Letter of Approval for Singapore Citizenship and was informed that I have to proceed to renounce my Malaysian Citizenship. The given appointment at ICA on 24 Mar 2016 9.45am. You may change the appointment if unable to make it on that day.

Before going to the High Commission of Malaysia, have these documents with you. They are open for submission of Form K (Borang K) only from 8am-11am on weekday.

1. Original Approval Letter for Singapore Citizenship registration + 2 Photocopies of 1st page. (Attachment page is not required.)
3. Latest Passport.
4. Original Birth Certificate (Laminated) + 2 Photocopies front and back.
5. Original MyKad (Malaysia IC) + 2 Photocopies front and back.
6. Original Blue IC (Singapore PR NRIC) + 2 Photocopies front and back.
7. 3 Passport Size Photos (White Background).
8. SGD 7.00.

11 Mar 2016
I headed down to Jervois Road (High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore) to process it.
- Head first to the security guard house outside.
- Exchange for a visitor pass with an alternative identification card (For eg: Driving License, Passion Card etc). This is because you will need your MyKad (Malaysia IC) and Blue IC (Singapore PR NRIC) with you for verification and submission.
- Next go in by the side gate, you may ask any person where is the consular office. Its actually on the far right if you are facing the office for passport application.

At the consular office, there is an officer in white at the corner of the room where all the forms are.
Go to her and let her know that you wanted to renounce your Malaysian Citizenship since you have the approval letter. **She is quite fierce, make sure you follow her instruction.
She will go through your documents to see if you have it all ready and amend your error on the printed copy of forms.
Once clear, she will pass you 2 set of original Form K (in yellow) and you will need to copy all the details from your printed copy over to these originals.
She will also inform you to fill it up in BLACK PEN provided, CAPITAL LETTERS and NO CANCELLATION.

When all are completed, again she will verify everything and he will take both your left and right thumbprint and give you a queue number.

This is the easier part. Once your number is called, go to the counter and the lady will ask for all your photocopy documents and originals. The only item she will return to you is your Blue IC (Singapore PR NRIC), the rest of them will be kept. She will also paste the passport size photos onto your forms.
Once she is done, she will pass you a slip for payment.

Wait for your number to be call again for payment which is S$7.00 and issue you a collection slip (pink slip).

I can collect approved Form MY-RN1 on 16 Mar 2016 between 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Approximately 3 working days later. So I changed my appointment with ICA to 17 Mar 2016.

17 Mar 2016
Headed to ICA an hour earlier than appointment time to take photos and photocopy all the documents needed. It is all stated clearly in the Letter of Approval of Singapore Citizenship. You will be register for citizenship, taking Oath and get a collection slip of NRIC. They will inform you that you will need to come back to ICA within 4 months with the letter from Malaysia High Comm. Make sure you bring along your NRIC collection slip.
** I submitted form for application of new passport on the same day as well.

10 Jun 2016
Received a letter from Malaysia High Comm to collect my Borang K by 9 Sep 2016

However before I do that I need to first go to ICA (6th Floor) to request for certified true documents as stated in the letter.
-2 photocopies of the true Singapore Citizenship Certificate (Front and Back)
-2 photocopies of Singapore Passport (Bio-data page only)
-2 photocopies of Singapore NRIC (Front and Back)
With that, I can then collect Form K from Malaysia High Comm.
Note, collection of Form K is from 2:30pm to 4pm Mon - Fri only.

11 Jun 2016
Go to ICA to request for certified documents. Collect it from ICA after 2-3 weeks.
Note: bring along the letter from Malaysia High Comm and your collection slip of NRIC

2 July 2016
Collect certified documents from ICA.

15 July 2016
Go to Malaysia High Comm at 2.30pm. Pass the certified documents and letter to Malaysia High Comm to the staff. Wait for them to call your name and proceed to the counter. He/She will return you approved Borang K and your birth certification.

After collect Borang K, heading down to ICA to submit photocopy of Borang K. That's all. Just wait for a letter to inform you the collection of original IC and Citizenship Certificate.
**Please make sure you submit Borang K to ICA within the 4 months timeframe.

Update (25-Sep-2020): Glad that this blog helps fellow Malaysians in citizenship renunciation. Noticed a few readers asking about the process, timeline, property, EPF and bank accounts. Do note that the process and timeframe in my blog may no longer valid/accurate as there's changes over the years, hence will not be able to advise. Feel free to read the latest comments from readers or directly check with Malaysia High Comm/ ICA staff for latest info. Also, I may not be able to answer any question regarding property, EPF etc as I do not own any assets in Malaysia.

  9. Hi,

What is the procedure to get the certified true copies?

Did you first get the copies printed or photocopied before passing them to ICA to stamp the certification on them, or leave the duplicating entirely to them?

As for the request, did you need to fill up a certain form?

    3. Hi,

I have the same situation as you both Charles and ixote. Submission period is around the same timing. Wondering malaysia will drop a mail to Malaysia address or Singapore address? Please advise. And I receive letter from ICA to inform me to submit pending document, I guess it should be borang K...

I went to MHC to collect borang K, but they insist to present ‘slip’ which I have forgotten what slip is it, since my application was last September 2018, I can’t recall.

      SOS pls..

Once you get the ICA letter of approval, would you still be able to travel outside with Malaysian passport? You submitted your boring K on 11 March, does it mean after 11 March, you cannot travel anymore till you get your Singaore passport? m

    2. I think by email is faster and better. No need to update even if your residential address changed during the waiting period.

    1. No. You have to surrender it. Only your BC will be given back to you in 6 to 8 months time. I just got my SC on 10 Sep 2019 (took oath). Malaysia approved (get Borang K back) on 28 Feb 2020

  29. Any translation required for the renunciation document before going to IC to register for your citizenship ?

    ReplyDelete
  30. No.The MY-RN 1 Form aka Application for Renumciation of Malaysian Citizenship is in English. It will state that you have applied to renounce your Malaysian Citizenship by surrendering your IC, Pasport and BC (only BC you will get back later in 6 mth). You need to show ICA this MY-RN1 Form when you turn up to register as a SC and take the oath.

  31. If I have savings account and ASB account in Malaysia. Do I need to surrender as well? As they only indicate to settle property in Malaysia before renunciation
